Try Cilantro herb, but it purely depends on the dish you are preparing.

For rices we can substitute cinnamon

Okay, I will preface this by saying that nothing can quite replace the wonderful scent and taste of cardamom! It is just too special. But when I think of what cardomom is usually paired with (in desserts, for example), it may work with the dish in question. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice or allspice, even a teeny bit of orange blossom water or vanilla, blended in various ways, may get you close. Maybe even a tiny bit of ginger? Give it a try - I hope it works!

There is no substitute for cardamom, It has a unique flavor and if you want your dish to taste authentic, you need to find it. Other answerers suggested ways of finding it. If you have an Arab community near you (that's where I find my unusual spices) you will be able to find the seeds. Be aware that the fresher the seed, the more powerful the flavor. It can be very strong.

Nothing tastes quite like cardamom. It's a relative of ginger, but has a musky aroma. For a somewhat similar effect, you could use a mixture of cinnamon and nutmeg (or cloves or allspice) as a replacement for ground cardamom in a 1:1 ratio. The substitute won't taste exactly like cardamom (the musky aroma will be missing), but you will be using similar "warm" spices in place of the cardamom and the recipe will not fail.

I love cardamom. I found a local health food store that sells spices quite reasonably. I understand it's pretty common for them to do that. I get an ounce of ground cardamom for under $3.00 there. That way I can afford not to replace it with anything. I often add a little to any recipe that also calls for cinnamon.

However, a little nutmeg and cinnamon and ginger mixed together will do in a pinch.

In my opinion, there really is no substitute. Check with an Indian grocer for really inexpensive cardamom. Norweigans use this spice frequently as well in baking. It's definitely lemony and earthy. The taste is heavenly in chicken and other dishes.

cardamom is a very mild spice, origin Norway, i baked some cookies ("cardamom cookies) and they were very bland tasting,
it depends on the cookie flavour you want, you can add vanilla extract, almond extract, if you are trying to substitute it isnt really a big thing for me, like i said it was soooooo bland tasting, a teaspoon of cinnamon is also good to use and in most cases the cookie will NOT taste cinamoni, is that a word :)

Use cinnamon or mace. Since cardamom is a strong aromatic spice belonging to the ginger family, if you run out, try 1 teaspoon curry powder -- which contains cardamom. The taste will be equally enjoyable

In my opinion in some desserts recipes such as Indian/middle Eastern recipes Cardamom is the key spice/ingredient. I guess in savory recipes it would be easier to substitute it.

If you don't have cardamom, you can substitute ground nutmeg.

Or, use ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, coriander seeds or mace, starting with half the quantity specified and adding more to taste.

>>ajwain = ajwain seed = carom seed = bishop's weed = ajowan = ajowan seed = ajwon = ajwan Pronunciation: AHJ-a-wahn Notes: These look like small caraway seeds, but they taste like a pungent version of thyme. Indian cooks like to sprinkle them on breads. Look for them in Indian markets. Substitutes: dried thyme (use more) OR cumin OR caraway<<

AND>>>cardamom = cardamon = green cardamom Notes: Cardamom figures prominently into the cuisines of India, the Middle East, North Africa, and Scandinavia. It best to buy cardamom seeds still encased in their natural flavor-protecting pods, which you discard after you remove the seeds. You can also buy cardamom without the pods, called cardamom seeds = decorticated cardamom, but the unprotected seeds lose flavor quickly. Ground cardamom seeds are even less flavorful. Recipes that call for cardamom usually intend for you to use green cardamom, named for the green pods that encase the seeds. Some producers bleach the green hulls to a pale tan, but this makes them less aromatic. Brown cardamom is a similar spice that Indians use in savory dishes. Equivalents: One pod yields 1/6 teaspoon cardamom. Substitutes: brown cardamom OR equal parts ground nutmeg and cinnamon OR equal parts ground cloves and cinnamon OR nutmeg OR cinnamon<<<

Actually there is no alternative for cardamom. Its flavor and aroma is so great. What we get in the market is of the lowest quality and pay more.
The actual price for a very good quality cardamom in Kerala is only Rs.380/=
The next choice can be the leaves of a tree called ALL SPICES
This tree is not very common . But in kerala trees can be seen.
