Since Adam and Eve were the first (and only) human beings, their children would have no other choice than to intermarry. God did not forbid inter-family marriage until much later when there was enough people that intermarriage was not necessary (Leviticus 18:6-18). The reason that incest often results in genetic abnormalities in children is that when two people of similar genetics (i.e. a brother and sister) have children – genetic defects are far more likely to result because both parents had the same defects themselves. When people from different families have children – it is highly unlikely that both parents will have the same genetic defects. The human genetic code has become increasingly “polluted” over the centuries as genetic defects are multiplied, amplified, and passed down from generation to generation. Adam and Eve did not have any genetic defects, so that enabled them and the first few generations of their descendants to have a far greater quality of health than we do now. Adam and Eve’s children had few, if any, genetic defects. As a result, it was safe for them to intermarry. It may seem strange or even disgusting to think of Cain's wife being his sister. In the beginning, since God started with one man and one woman, the second generation would have no choice but to intermarry amongst themselves.

The question you've asked and the majority of answers you have received, assume that Adam and Eve really were the first couple on this planet. Personally I don't think that's the case. As some have suggested though, incest was definitely a common way to reproduce back then.

Taken literally, there is only one possible answer (yes, kids, the Bible promotes incest where necessary to populate or repopulate a planet). However, it seems that some people want to specify that there are other people outside the Garden with whom these folks may breed. No mention of where they came from or how they got there, they just are.

Of course, if you accept the literal answer, then it may explain how the human race managed to become so norked up.

adam and Eve had other sons and daughters after cain and abel. Seth was mentioned and the account of Genesis went further to say adam, meanwhile became father to 'sons and daughters'(Genesis 5:3,4),From this account at Genesis Chapter 5 from verse one downwards, we see a list of other children that followed. Since there no other record of others being created after adam and eve, we can see from here that the children married themselves adngave birth and since they were nearer to perfection then the children were normal. (Another example can be seen from Noah's time after the flood, from eight persons the population grew).

Each other. The Bible often adds "They had other sons and daughters." Usually, only the oldest son is mentioned. The sons married the daughters because, at that time, the genetic pool was so concentrated that inbreeding had n bad effects

Their wives - other people that God created years and years later. Not with Eve like many say. God created Adam first. Outside the Garden of Eden, after they sinned and were threw out, God was creating a few other humans for their sons.

Their brothers and sisters, of course.
Cain's wife was his sister. But it wasn't "weird" back then; Adam and Eve kept having children for years after Cain left on his own. Eventually, he meets a woman. It's his sister, but he didn't grow up with her. Also, back then you didn't have problems with bad genes building up, because it was only the 2nd generation. Their bodies were still far superior to ours. It wasn't until the time of Moses that laws were given to forbid incest, because by that time, enough bad genes had accumulated to cause birth defects.

Adam means mankind. It's an allegory - you're not supposed to take it literally.

Many religions have stories about the "good old days" when mankind were hunter gatherers and didn't have to bother with hard work. In Jewish folklore, this period is represented by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

The real answer is evolution.

We came from lesser celled organisms which makes this a mute question. Why did i fly to work today when i could have slithered?

i didn't fly i drove. Who did caine and able have sex with? Chances are they didn't even exist. The "original people" had sex with the same species of creature that they also were.

One answerer mentions that adam and eve had no genetic defects to be passed on to their children. If there were no genetic defects, where did they come from? A mutation (this is evolution) or did god just mess up when he created us and ended up creating broken humans? It is called a faith because that is all people have. faith.
