When i went to elementary school i called my teachers Miss Glenn, Miss Sherril....or maybe I was saying Ms Glenn... it's said as "mizz". In the South, Mizz Sherril can pass as Miss or Ms or Mrs and is always acceptable. And if you're in doubt a nice 'ma'am' always works.

Always use Miss when you are speaking with someone older than you. Miss and the first name if it is someone you know. Always say Ma'am also. In the south, that is just good manners.

It should be no different in the south than anywhere else, except that the accents may get people confused.

Mrs. - A married woman (pronounced "misses")
Ms. - An unmarried woman (pronounced "mizz")
Miss - A young girl. (pronounced as written)

If I am referring to a female that is older than me, by their first name, I will call them "Miss so-and-so.:

If you're a man, anytime you talk to a female younger than you; and to older women who don't require you to refer to than by their last name (then it would be Mrs. Smith, as opposed to Miss Janice).

Basically all the time.

In the South, all women are referred to as "Miss". It does not matter if they are married, single or divorced.

When she is your elder and you know her well enough to call her by her first name you ad the Miss., Ms., or Mrs. at that time out of respect.

Miss (First name) is a sign of respect from a younger person. It is very prevalent here in Georgia.
