It goes back to the 1930s when the Government devised a scheme for funding road maintenance.

In essence, there were three classes of road. "A", "B" and "C".

Although Local Authorities were responsible for the work, the Government gave different levels of grant, depending upon the class of road. "A" class roads were given a higher rate of grant than "B" class roads, which, in turn, got a better rate of grant than "C" class roads.

Some roads were so minor as to be outwith the main classification, so the "U" class was created (unclassified.)

The system did not really work and the Government took control of the maintenance of certain roads. These were called trunk roads and were designated with the suffix (T). For example, the Glasgow to Portpatrick road is a trunk road between Fenwick and Stranraer and the correct designation over this section is A77(T); the remainder of the road is plain A77.

as far as i'm aware they are minor roads compared to the motorways but they can still be quite major still like the A1 or the A58, which is the old route before the M62 in my area, however there are b-roads too which are much smaller - like and alternative route which go through the lesser known areas.

"A" doesnt "stand" for anything ..its simply a nomenclature or prefix given to roads which are considered major `routes, but which are not physically motorways, There is also a "B" prefix as well for lesser routes. Most roads are given no classification at all.
