Humans, apes, guinea pigs and some fruit bats all share a disability. They are all unable to biosynthesize ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). Other mammals can do this so why not us and these others? Lack of ascorbic acid results in an afliction called scurvy which causes you to bleed from the soft membranes in your mouth and *other* parts and ultimately results in death.

The gene to code the enzyme responsible (L-gulono-γ-lactone oxidase) for synthesis exists in humans and other primates, as it does in other mammals (except guinea pigs), but it is damaged or disabled so it specifically cannot do anything.

So why would God do this? Is it a result of original sin? Why did he specifically only give this disability to a select group of mammals?

Okay you say God had a reason for it, then why did he leave evidence that he did it? Why would he leave the damaged gene in mammals with this disability? Why not just remove it completely? Sure he knew that one day we'd find it and feel a little bit blighted by the fact. "Gee thanks God, just force us to rely on obtaining it from elsewhere while other animals can make their own!"

Btw I really liked that answer - "to keep Adam & Eve on the oranges and away from the apples" xD Great stuff!

Obviously, doG also subsidizes farmers by ensuring the need to grow tomatoes and oranges, and plus he needs to keep his catholic flock employed enough (migrant fruit pickers) to not convert and, more importantly, to tithe.

It was His decision, He's our Creator. We cannot question it because we do not have the right to. God does not have "anything against humans, other primates, guinea pigs, and some fruit bats" by not giving them the ability to synthesize Vitamin C. It is not a result of original sin. The ability was given to a select group of mammals because that's how He likes it.

He has nothing against us when He decides that we should suffer a fall and scrape our knees, nor does he have anything against us when He decides that we should die from cancer, etc. It's just the same in this case.

Besides, He *did* create Vitamin C-rich fruits. There are Mandarins, oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and limes. And that's just naming the citrus family. There are also grapes, guavas, etc. Not being able to synthesize Vitamin C does not really put as at a disadvantage--we have other sources of obtaining it ^_^

In essence, you're asking a--IMO--stupid question. Your type of question is one in an endless list, see:

1) Why didn't God give us the ability to eat grass? Is He determined that we die from famine and starvation?
2) Why didn't God give us the natural-born ability to swim like most animals? Does He want all of humanity to die of drowning?
3) Yadda, yadda...

As for why He did it... You just answered the question yourself =) He leaves signs of His power in His creations, so that we'll ponder about them, and His existence. I hope this answers your question well.

He was hoping that by giving us a Vitamin C deficiency Adam and Eve would stick to the citrus trees and ignore the apple tree.

Sorry, had to say it.

Because these animals are able to acquire Vitamin C from their diet. Other animals that cannot acquire Vitamin C are designed by God to biosynthesize it.

god gave us weakness so that we would humble ourselves to him. Think about it. We came on this earth to see if we would rely on him. He's like our father. For example, you want to make the right decision for your kids cause you know what the world is going to do to them, but you can only help them if they let you. Hope this helps, bye bye.
