Okay, this is a very arduous process, but it must be done in order to get rid of head lice. First, you must treat everyone in the house with a lice treatment shampoo, everyone, even if you can't see the lice, everyone's head must be treated. You can go to any drugstore or Wal-Mart. The one that I have found that works the best is Lice-Free. It is all natural, no pesticides, but you do have to leave it on your head for at least one hour. The ones with insecticide state to only leave on for 10 minutes, no longer. My daughter has caught lice at school and those 10 minute lice treatments, do not work as effectively. So, follow the instructions on the box. The only thing that I would do differently is wash your hair out thoroughly with a lot of conditioner, before using their steel comb on your hair. The directions tell you to comb out your hair while that stuff is still in there, but that is not necessary if you leave it in your hair for over an hour.

Okay, while that stuff is in your hair, WASH ALL SHEETS, STUFFED ANIMALS, ETC IN HOT WATER. If you can not wash the stuffed animals, you must leave them in a plastic air-tight bag for two weeks.

Also, vacuum all carpets. While this stuff is in your hair, and also after you have combed your hair out.

Then someone has got to comb out all the nits of the infected person/people's head. This is a pain in the rear, but if any nits survive and hatch, then here we go again.

The furniture-mattresses, couches, etc. also need to be sprayed down with either the lice treatment spray made for furniture, again found at the drug-store or Wal-Mart, or you can put off insecticide bombs after everything else is done, and have everyone leave the house for a few hours and take a break after all your hardwork.

Well, here we go again anyway, b/c for best results, you should repeat this whole procedure in 7 days, just in case, any nits did survive.

If you have children in school or daycare, especially girls with long hair, you should make it a habit to check their hair frequently. Educate them about not sharing combs, and how lice is spread from one to another. Most lice treatment shampoos have informative inserts to expain the life cycle of lice and how they are spread. They do not jump, but they do crawl. ooh gross.

Just remember, you don't get lice b/c you are dirty or don't wash your hair, so if it is a child we are talking about, don't make them feel like they have done anything wrong. It's just a parasite that actually likes clean heads to burrow in and feed off. ooh gross again.

So, after this arduous procedure. The real question should be...how do I prevent head lice from reoccurring once I've killed them all and picked out all the nits?????

Have you tried an OTC remedy? If you don't want to use it, try this home remedy.

Apply petroleum jelly to the head, being sure to massage all the way down to the scalp. Cover the head with a shower cap and leave on overnight. The next morning, rinse out the petroleum jelly. (You'll probably have to use soap and not shampoo, so be careful not to get it in the eyes).

Don't forget to wash all bedding in hot water to kill nits and lice hiding.

Try to look for Kwell shampoo. It's specifically for head lice.

First get one of those nit combs. Then you need to apply tonnes of conditioner on to your hair, making sure you cover your roots and scalp. You need to leave the conditioner on for several hours, whilst combing your hair through with the nit comb. After about 6-12 hours, you can then shampoo your hair and rinse. HTH : )
