Here is a good reason why you were denied: You do not have a British Passport.

When you say that you have lived in the U.K. for most of your life do you mean two weeks? If you have more than 10 years of legal residence, have a home, a car, and make more than 1,000 pounds a month. You should be approved. Otherwise post a new question with your specifics.

Also, how did you get to the U.K.? If you went illegally, you are always going to be denied.

Do you have relatives in America? How did they come?

You didn't specify your nationality or legal status in the U.K. but if you can prove that you have permanent legal status to live and work in the U.K. at your will then you should stand a better chance.

Those consular officers can sometimes be irrational or just not all straightforward with you and with their inherent bias just decide to follow the previous ruling of the past officers without taking full account of your present facts and character on a whole.

Maybe it's time for you to consider alternate travel plans because there is truly more to see in this world than just the U.S.

Be cheerful and be positive and keep on doing the right thing. Peace.
