There's a book written about 300 A.D. by Eusibius ,called' A Church History.' It tells what happened up to the time of Constantine.
Basically , the students of the Apostles taught and founded church after church, through numerous persecutions all through So. Europe,Asia and Egypt. Then came the power grabs in the 200s, where one Church wanted to be the "Boss" over the others. Not the way Paul set up the church system. That's when the "split" came between the Roman Church and the Eastern Orthodox as well as the Egyptian Coptics, late in the 200s.

Most of the early Christians were Jewish , and in the second century Rome attacked the Jewish people and drove them out of Palestine and so the Jews along with the Christians Jews and the gospel was spread throughout the whole world of that time. For the next century or two, two things happened, the Church solidified itself in doctrine and practice and the church was under terrible persecution and death by Rome. In 325 the Roman emporer Constantine claimes to become a convert to Christianity and made it allowable for you to be Christian, and he also declared himself to be the Pontifus Maximus (Top leader) of the church ultimately becoming the position of the Pope. The Catholic church led the church into what became known as the dark ages, until Martin Luther, about the 1500s, protested the dominace of Rome and led a "Protestant" revolution to break from Catholic control thus starting the protestant denominations. THis has developed into the vast number of deligious divisions that exist in Christianity today.
