Perhaps you are trying to bypass the big agencies that peel off part of your donation for administrative expenses? If so, go to a search engine like Yahoo or Google, and type in "united way" and the name of your state. Select the one in your region and then look for their "Partner Agencies". Those are the individual charities that actually need the money. You can skip the middle man, and that way the charity gets ALL of your donation.

You can also look in the front of your phone book where the crisis services are, and give to one of those. Many are privately funded and they help battered women, children and the elderly.

Other worthy causes:
Autism society in your state
Meals on Wheels
Local ASPCA
Local Cancer care Center - many have special charities to help patients with stuff insurance doesn't cover
Local Hospital charity fund to help patients pay their bills
Your public library

A charity I support and have visited is "Let the Children Live" (See www.letthechildrenlive.org) it works with Street Children in Colombia South America, helping to re-intergrate the children with their families/communities where possible, educating them, teaching them a trade and also trying to prevent the children going to live on the streets in the first place. I spent two months in Colombia working with these children, and I believe it is a very worthwhile cause. However there are many worthwhile small charities and ultimately the decision is yours as to which you choose.

We are not asking for your money, but we are funded by BBC Children In Need.
The problem is that, by the time they have finished paying tax etc, there isnt that much to go round.
We run a small after school club for deprived children. Maybe you could find a small local centre near you, then give them the money direct. This way they will get all of the money, and you will be able to see the result of your good deed!

Try calling your chamber of commerce office or the local United Way. United Way usually gives small amounts of money to charities around the town.

If you have a friend or relative with a specific disease or illness, maybe the local medical center can recommend a health based charity that needs money for support groups or research. That way you'd be giving to a cause that means something to one of your nearest and dearest.

The Salvation Army does the best job of directing money donated to people in need. If you don't want to give to the national organization, your local chapter will be happy to put the money to use in your community.
