Spray him with the garden hose every time he comes in the yard.

If he is truly a stray, I would call animal control. He's in more danger running around in traffic than at the shelter, where he has the chance to be adopted.

I understand that you don't want to send him to a shelter, but honestly, it's the best thing if you cannot take him in yourself, or know someone who can, in order to search for owners or place him in a proper home. He will get a chance at the shelter and it's better than being left outside.

Maybe you could see if there is a shelter somewhere near you that operates as a non-kill shelter? I don't have one in town, but there is one within 2 hours drive of my home. If you are worried about him ending up put down, this is probably your best option and will give him the best chance.

legally the only thing and the best thing is to call the pound or SPCA in your area.. most dont just put them down.. legally they have to keep them for a certain period of time and look for the dogs rightful owner... after that time they decide if the dog is adoptable or not.. and if not then euthanized... to simply leave the dog outside wandering looking for food etc is far more cruel than taking it to the pound

taking him far from your home is ILLEGAL in most areas - you could be charged with THEFT and ADANDONMENT so dont do that...

females in heat need to be kept indoors and outside only with supervison...

Do you know who he belongs to? A dog like that would be pretty hard to forget.

You may be better off taking him to the local SPCA: Someone might adopt him there, and take him to live far away from your home.

Good luck.

If he seems friendly, and would allow you to take him somewhere, find a "no-kill" shelter in your area that will take him. good luck!
