does the opening have to be so narrow? Are you so rigid in your belief or non belief that you cannot at least open it a little bit wider to hear the opinions of others before you slam it shut?

I'm perfectly fine at hearing the opinions of others, but i don't like it when others attack my belief. I think it's uncalled for and rude. They wouldn't like it if I attacked theirs.

I think it sometimes has a lot to do with this forum. It's a limited space in which to place a lot of very complex thoughts and opinions, so as much as I am open minded, and do listen to other peoples points of view and am not so arrogant as to think that I KNOW anything at all. When faced with a brick wall I retaliate with a sledge hammer.

It's not really a true representation of my whole thought process. Having said that I still manage to be as open in my posts as I possibly can, but I do see how others may come accross more arrogant than they really are.

I always listen to people's belief. I read it on here constantly, and in most cases, do not make any negative comments about it.

However, when I have someone degrading my beliefs for the sake of their own, I get angry and I will slam the door shut...hard.

It's a two-way street. If you want me to be open-minded and listen to your beliefs, as well as respect them, then I will expect the same in return.

I'm constantly trying to ask questions that make people, especially believers think - but the more a question hits home the more often they get reported and deleted.

That's why I think the one thing I have learned about most religious people is that, facts, reality, commonsense, rational thinking, and the like, have no place in their lives. You can not reason with them - it's the great mystery of human behavior.

You only keep an open mind until you have a paradigm that works... why keep it open and waste your energy after that point - unless you are in an occupational role that requires you to. We need to close our minds sometimes so that we have space to analyse and think.
