If you want great coffee, you really cannot beat the French press. Do NOT boil water with which you make coffee-- boiling water overcooks it. Also, if you are a coffee lover and want to have the auto coffee maker as well as the Fr press on hand, you cannot go wrong w/the initially expensive investement of a burr grinder to ensure you get the exact right grind for the process you use.
The best automatic coffeemakers are those that:
- have a thermal carafe, so the heating base doesn't burn the coffee
- grind the beans immediately before brewing.
They also always recommend using good-tasting water, so water that's filtered, purified.
Most people don't know that in coffeemachines, you should use 2 scoops of coffee for each cup you brew. This can be difficult b/c most auto coffee makers don't have the capacity to hold all that coffee.

My favorite is the Hamilton Beach 12-cup brewmaster. Remember that it's not the coffee pot alone that makes good coffee. Buy good quality coffee, make sure the pot is spotlessly clean and use cold water.

Most coffee makers make good coffee. I like perked coffee personally, but a coffee maker doesn't do this alone it needs you to screw it up first.
