In many cases this is not the case, but in this case you're obviously not putting enough stress on that group. If you're referring to muscle soreness or DOMS(delayed onset muscle soreness) that's caused by microtrauma. This is minute tearing of the individual fibers, not lactic acid, which is soon cleared from the Muscle tissue when normal circulation returns. You'll either have to increase the amount of sets or reps in order to start feeling sore again.Adding weight held on your chest or behind your head will help.Concentrate on moving slowly on the way down(eccentric phase) then quickly on the way up(concentric phase). This will help to activate the myotatic reflex to involve more muscle fibers.
You most definitely DO want your muscles to burn as that's a sign you're building lactic acid.Once the lactic acid is released from the muscle tissue it causes a spike in growth factors like IGF 1 and growth hormone.
Abs and calves are the only two muscle groups that should or can be trained every day.Take a day or two if you're doing weighted sit ups or crunches.

Because your ab muscles are used to the standardized routine- they have reached a plateau.
You either need to increase the amount of reps you do or do some other kind of ab work.
They need to be changed up so that they can be put to the test some more

Youre most likely getting used to your workout. You need to switch it up. Try going to a pilates class or two, you'll learn a ton of new ab stuff. Or try doing your crunches on an exercies ball.
And the person that saide burning is bad is wrong. Burning is good, hurting is bad. dont do anything that hurts, but if it burns, that means it's working.
The key to most muscle conditioning/building routines is to mix it up or your body gets used to it.

If you haven't been doing much ab-work before then maybe because you weren't working them before so you felt sore then, but now you got used to the work-outs. Try increasing the numbers a bit, and increase them every couple of work-outs.

That just means your abs got used to the workout. Do a different routine and work them harder.

Having greater muscle will enhance your metabolism, somewhat. although, there's a element of diminishing returns, in that to greater desirable build greater muscle, you will ought to soak up greater energy.

because the exercise is too easy........try increasing the intensity....use weights when you do crunches......
oh, and btw, you never want your muscles (including abs) to "burn".........thats not good.......youre fatiguing your muscles....which is not the goal......the goal is to overload the muscles causing them to grow........hold a weight in your hands on your chest during crunches.......weight should be heavy enough to do no more than 10 reps.....
