From the trend of the question I rather feel that somebody is already in the snare and unable to get out and is desirous of knowing how he/she could make life bearable.First of all let the individual disabuse the mind that he/she had been gulty of a blunder. Love is , as the old materialist school said, is like the attraction that exists between a piece of magnet and a piece of iron. Nobody can help being attracted. The iron cannot go on for consulting experts before taking on the magnet.Once it is recognised that it was not mere tom-foolry on its part to go in for the relationship the mind can become unfettered for correcting at the last partially the course of the event. One way is to try to understand that what one considers as evil may be just the differences in appreciation. A Western girl brought up in a liberal atmosphere may appear tobe evil for an Indian boy steeped in family values .If he really loves the girl he must endeavour to accommodate the difference in views in his universe of discourse. This is not accepting the evil or surrendering to it. It is only being realistic.Always remember to maintain the flame of love always burning and in that light you can find a way in the darkest of nights.

You have to get to know a person before you can decide if you want a friendship or a romantic relationship with them. If you had a friend who always behaved in ways that offended you or angered you, you would be able to make a decision about whether or not you want to continue the friendship because you've gotten to know them already...same thing for having a romantic relationship with someone...you have to get to know them first.

you have to get to know them for a while to know what kind of person they are. that's why its best to always be friends with someone for a while before you date them.

do some checking up on them if you want. Google their name, its amazing what you will come up with. Also, ask a judge or cop friend to look up their record. Seems like a bit much, but like you said you can never be too careful these days. You are just protecting yourself.

Don't reach out to others hoping you can change them for the better . The person can only change if he wills it for himself to be better--if he chooses to change. You cannot change another, it is only them who can decide and act to change for the better.
