Is there any way to get around a change fee? I am currently studying abroad in Australia, and was supposed to spend a four day layover in Fiji for my return trip. However, Fiji is now at a high risk for a coup, and my university is recommending that I don't go. Is there anyway to get out of paying $200 to change my ticket for this?

Not unless the airline issues a blanket waiver ...generally. They do for many situations....ie London subway bombing, weather situations including hurricanes, SARS, etc. Check with your airline. And sometimes, if you are extremely polite, not righteously indignant or whining, the agent will go to bat for you and try and get a waiver for you on a case by case situation. Check the following website....www.travel.state.gov ....if they mention travel advisory to Fiji, it may give you some clout in arguing your case. Waivers are for situations out of your control, not a voluntary change.
