I have been procrastinating taking a prescription of prozac 20mg's daily. I have a complete phobia of taking any medication. Do you think it is one of the reasons I need to be medicated. I have to work myself up to take and advil. Honestly, do I need to worry about taking Prozac side effects. I have taken sarafem in the past and had virtually no side effects. At that time it was only 10mgs will I have sever side effects. I know I sound like a big baby but I really need some convincing, I know that I need to get better but I am utterly terrified of taking any meds.

Please help!

Determine what your needs are and weather to brave it or not.

You present a challenging problem to your own treatment, but not one that can't be dealth with. What I suggest depends greatly on what you have available, both in your geographic area, any medical insurance plan or access to care, etc. Ideally, what you could do, if feasible, would be to see a psychologist for cognitive-behavioral treatment of your phobic feelings about taking medication. That could help you to modify your feelings about getting to take medication. Once that part is taken care of then you can talk to a psychiatrist about the possibility of being on meds under her/his care. A caring, understanding, patient psychiatrist can make a world of difference. I won't be as unrealistic as to say that most psychiatrists fall under this category these days, so you might need to talk to more than one before you decide on a specific one. Anyway, it's a two-stage process for you, ideally. First work on the fear of meds. Then consider the possibility of taking the meds. It will require one psychologist first and one psychiatrist later.

My brother needs anti depressants and refuses to take them. He is miserable.

Do what your doctor tells you to do and/or get another professional opinion.
