I don't believe Christians suffer any more than anyone else, but what's that have to do with eternal life being a free gift?

Eternal Life is a free gift from God. Suffering is a free gift from man. The two have absolutely nothing to do with each other.

Eternal life is not exactly a free gift. God's plan is for us all to live forever on a paradise earth, but the wicked will not be included. As for the suffering, Satan is currently the ruler of this world and he is the cause of it.

Rom 8:17 And since we are his children, we will share his treasures-for everything God gives to his Son, Christ, is ours, too. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering
1Cr. 4:12 We have worked wearily with our own hands to earn our living. We bless those who curse us. We are patient with those who abuse us.
Phl 1:29 For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him.

There are a lot more verses about this, When you become a Christian you will go through trials and tribulations it is for your growth.
Heb. 12:8 If God doesn't discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children after all.
When you become a Christian it will be the hardest decision ever but the benefits are eternal. Count it all JOY when you suffer for His sake.

Jesus never said we would not suffer. Most the time why we do suffer is for a few reasons I can think of.
1. Because we have made bad choices and those bad choices brings on the suffering.
2. We are still in the flesh and if you are saved your flesh will buck aganist the Spirit.

Romans 5:1-4: Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only [so], but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

There is a purpose in our trials and sufferings. It is through them that we learn to be patient in our faith. Possessing patience will allow us to learn from our experiences. Surviving our trials brings us hope.

I often tell people that God is the builder of eternal character. We suffer in this present age in preparation for greater responsibilities and unimaginable things to come.

Eternal life is NOT free. There's a price to be paid. Jesus put a HUGE down-payment on that price. We just have to make the payments.
