Maybe you could also consider a Tibetan Spaniel. They have slightly longer & silkier coats & slightly longer faces but the same sort of curly over tail, big round eyes & floppy ears. These weigh in around 4-7kg & are about 25cm high (Pugs approx 8.1kg & 28cm).
Here's a couple of photos:

There's a bit of information about them here:

Just to expand on one of your other answers:
The smooth coat Brussels Griffon is known in the UK as the Griffon Bruxellois. They stand up 7-8" high & can weigh up to 4.5kg - compared with the Pug at around 11" & 8.1kg. The rough coat variety starred in a film called "As Good As It Gets" with Jack Nicholas.
The second image down on this site

has a head shot of the smooth coat.
This site also gives details of breed Clubs (rescue) & lists a few breeders.

Are you planning to get this type of dog simply because you think it's cute? If so, that's a bad reason to get a dog, hun. When looking for a dog, you really need to research what's out there, and choose something that suits your lifestyle and personality. And if that means the 'ugliest' dog on the planet, than so be it.
There is no such thing as a 'miniature' pug. There is a breed standard at about 14 - 18 lbs. If you do manage to find one smaller than that, and you're sure that it is purebred, then it is probably the runt of the litter, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, except that it isn't show-dog material. There are other breeds of 'pug-nosed' dogs out there, Shih Tzus, for example, but they all have their own special requirements.
That said, a Boston Terrier is also what is called a brachiocephalic (pug-nosed) dog, and it is smaller than a pug. Just a point to make for you; did you know that dogs like this, if hit in the back of the head too hard, can have an eye-ball pop out? It's something that I only learned a couple of days ago, and thought it was interesting. They also tend to have breathing problems if not properly bred. And trust me, there are many 'breeders' out there who are more concerned about the $$ than about the dog's health and safety, and its genetic problems.

Well a pug is pretty small. The standard states no more than 18lbs but most are smaller than that by some margin.
I think your best bet is to search for a breeder who favours the smaller variety or alternatively you could look for a smooth haired brussels Griffon - they have the same flat faces but are smaller, they are not quite as stocky, however.
Boston terriers, in the UK, are not smaller than Pugs and average 15-25lbs. You do get some very small ones but no smaller than your average Pug.
Good luck

Smaller than a pug? If you are truly interested, AKC.org has a breed selector quiz. Please don't buy from a backyard breeder or pet store, as these would be the people selling a mutated version of an actual breed or a "designer breed" which is really a mutt. At least do enough homework to purchase from a reputable breeder or rescue a dog. www.petfinder.org

Pugs top out at 14-18 pounds. How much smaller do you want??? Why not look for a smaller female at about 14 pounds or less.
Try a breed rescue and see what they have available for adults:

No miniature pugs, they come in one size. If you like that look but want a smaller dog, you may want to check out the Brussels Griffon (smooth coat variety): http://www.akc.org/breeds/brussels_griffon/index.cfm
& http://www.brussels-griffon.net/overview.html (2 smooths pictured at the bottom of the page)

Boston terriers are a pug-nosed breed. They come in 3 class sizes, and the smallest is only about 10 pounds. (Pugs average 18-25lbs.) I don't think you can get anything else that small and pug nosed, pugs are pretty small as it is.

Get the youngest pug dog you can find, they are very small when first born but they increase in size as they get older, they then reach a state known as 'adult' and will not get any bigger. At this stage you can employ simple tricks to make them look smaller, such as looking at them from further away.

Yes bostons can come fairly small. I like them a lot and they are so cute. Some bostons can be large. Search for a reputable breeder.
