I think many people just state the current fighters as the best. However, if it wasnt for the likes of Ken Shamrock, Royce Gracie, Dan Severn, etc... would UFC have kicked off into the sport of today?

In my opinion, I have to go for Ken Shamrock. In his prime he was very good and very quick. He was also the kings on submission holds. Ken Shamrock never backed down from a fight, even if he was injured (Ken Shamrock v Dan Severn second fight for example).

I could also say Royce Gracie, but I feel that his moment of glory was when Submssions was new to everyone at that time. Submission are nothing new, and have been the centerpoint for many years, but many people have forgetten the effectiveness of them. Once people and fighters addressed the submission game, Royce Gracie left the UFC (Ken Shamrock drew with Royce in their second match -- Ken was the better fighter though).

Ken was at the top of his game by then, as he studied the Gi and all which is why Royce had the early lead against Ken in their first fight.

We also have Dan Severn which was VERY exciting to watch but he is not a submission wrestler, and Ken tapped him out after testing Dan's stand up skills (their first match).

Ken has done some bad moments and all, and him joining WWE was one of them. I reckon the WWE did bugger up his body a little bit when returning to MMA. He wasnt as good as he was but we also need to address that the UFC rules are totally different now and of course the fighters are more well rounded.

At the end of the day, Ken Shamrock is what helped made the business what it is now, which results in many fighters today being sooo well rounded.

I hope Ken stays and focus on his Lion's Den crew. I am sure he will train some very good fighters within the next few years.

At the end of the day, the answer is Ken Shamrock.

Hughes, look at his record and look at who he beat...lots of top notch fighters and he has been consistant. He also wins by submission and KO, so he is well rounded.....Ken only wins by ankle lock. Shamrock is a household name and Hughes is only really known in the MMA world.

I reckon Matt Hughes. Two minor blemishes on what is a fantastic career. And watch him whup Georges St. Pierre's sorry *** at UFC 65 on Saturday.
