Dad was stationed there twice when I was a kid. The folks are retired outside of Columbus, GA now. There isn't a lot to do in the imediate area. But its a nice place to head to the beach from on the weekends. Atlanta is nice if you like big southern city life. If you have been there for schools then you know all about Victory Drive. Girl friend? Yep you really need to stay off VD drive. If you like fishing and outdoors stuff its not a bad place. If you or her are party animals..... go somewhere else. I grew up in the infantry, I can tell you that you don't want to go to Polk, Irwin or Drum. Best places were Italy, <---- best post oconus, West Point, Fort Ord (when it was open) and Fort Sam Houston, TX <--- best post conus.

I've been stationed there. Not much to do in the surrounding area, but weekend trips are close (i.e. the beach in FL, Atlanta, Savannah, etc). Columbus is a typical military town, and is what you would expect from one. There are better places, and there are far worse. Probably one of the better bases for the southern US. Don't expect too much intellegent life there, but like I said - real civilization is only a few hours away.

I retired from Fort Benning and I was stationed with Co. A, 43rd Engineer Battalion. Real good post and very good housing areas.

Better than some no worse than the rest. At least the winters aren't as nasty as Drum, Campbell or Knox. Summers you better stock up on deodorant. Housing is coming along and improvements are better than some other bases. Really depends on what you need, family housing? School? Closer to home? All and all any base is as good as you make it.

We were stationed there and loved it. Since, both my brother and sister have been stationed there and loved it as well. Looking back, it was one of the best duty stations we have lived on. Good luck!

Their last platoon cycle were the ones who got the stress treatment. If i remember what my friend who just finished ait told me, they are moving to stress cards. Everything is taken down a notch, and if you get stressed out, you pull a card out. Ft Leonardwood is doing that.
