We are wondering what type of ring we could get for our budget. We are more interested in good quality over size, but not necessarily looking for something tiny either. My BF keeps asking me this & I have no idea, so I'm hoping someone here can help. Going into a jewelery store is too high pressure-we're just looking for ideas at this point.

Wow! Thanks everyone for all the replies and links! I've been enjoying looking at them & all the different types of rings out there! We are really just beginning to look at things, and we won't be going to look at rings together--we're old fashioned & we want the proposal to be a surprise (kind of).

You can actually get a very nice ring for that amount. Try shopping wholesale if you live near a large city that has a wholsale diamond district. One way to take the pressure off is to look online. There are a lot of resources and information out there. I got engaged last year and that is what he spent, he bought the loose diamond and we picked out the setting for about 5200. He had purchased one at a large mall store JBR and the ring was that without the style setting I wanted. Oh we have a little over a carat, v vs1 and good color. Good luck shopping and congratulations!

Actually this more money than you will need, unless you a large woman. My opinion is you want a ring that is proportional to your hand size. If, it too big, it looks out of place and fake, to me. If, it too small it just not look good and cheap. You need to get an education about Gems and going to a few local stores are the best. Do not mess with big chain type places for now. A local store not pressure you and they not crowded with a lot of people. The Jeweler can take time to explain things and show you some loose stones. Normally people want a diamond for this and the many shapes and qualities. Rubies can also make a nice ring (REAL RUBIES)!!!! You can easily see a difference in a Lab Created Ruby and a Real one. OK, Diamonds come in sizes measured in Carats. Anything less than .45 carats will look too small on a woman, but, is good for children and earrings. If, you an average woman with hands about the size of your boyfriend or a little smaller, a .65-.75 carat will look nice. I would not go much larger than 1 carat. But, the Shape will play on size, a heart shped diamond you may want 1-1.25 carats, where a round a .85 will look nice. Look at the various sizes and shapes so you can decide what you want. Then you can tell your local Jeweler; (Example) "We want a .85 +/- Pear Shaped Diamond mounted in that cool ring you showed us" "We can spend XXXX Dollars for the best quality you can find". Also, tell the man you in no hurry as you want to take the time for him to find the best you can and you trust he will do this. Then he will get you exactly what you want, if, he good. You keep going to this guy asking questions and learning and deciding, you will know he good, because the people you do see walk in are not the average workers. This where you want to get your Diamond, because he WILL make phone calls and get you that Perfect Stone. Chain Stores not do this. Good Luck.
The links to same place, Home Page and Education I not say Buy from them but you can learn and see various shapes in you home.

I think that this is a great amount of money to spend on a ring and i would look around as you can get a nice ring for this price. You can probably get a carat or more, but go to a place that is a good diamond store and look at the better cuts as there is a difference and they will let you know. It's not always how big the package is, its the meaning behind it and love is not a diamond, it is what is in the heart. Good luck to you.

I would suggest not purchasing an engagement ring at a chain jewelry store (Littmans, Kay Jewelers, etc.) You never know what your exactly getting for your money. Buying the setting at one place and going to a Diamond Store to purchase the Diamond seperately is the best option. You will get more for your money and good quality verse buying the complete ring together. You can get a pretty nice diamond and setting for the amount you want to spend. Good Luck!

Go to costco!!! They have wonderful engagement rings that are within the $2700 and up budget that are colorless and are VS1 quality.
Plus it's nice because she can choose the ring and get to try it on--jewelry chain stores are often a rip-off, like Zales, Ben Bridge, etc. Their diamonds are lower quality.

Where I'm from $5000 will get you a pretty darn nice ring. But you really need to go to the stores and see what's out there. That's half the fun. Enjoy!! And Congrats!!!

Well, that's way too much to spend on an engagement ring. He should consider getting you something more modest, and use the rest of the money toward your life together. You can get something really nice for well under 1000. - Think about what is really important....

I think that's a ridiculous amount to spend on a ring. We spent about 1300 on mine and it's just fine. Save that extra money for a down payment on your first house.

This is a link to Helzberg's site, all I did was enter a price limit and it gave me like 4 pages of options, you can change your search I believe I did engagrment and wedding, I think it's better to buy a set then the engagement and wedding band seperate someines they don't match too well. Have fun shopping!
I just refined my search (the above link is just solitares--this one is the full set which is the engagement and wedding band together)

www.bluenile.com go here and build your ring, just to get an idea and also educate yourself on shape, clarity, cut, size, etc. 5 grand is a good amount to get something nice and classy.
