I live abroad and am very happy with the Nationwide Visa card.
The exchange rates given are accurate and there are no charges for use in an ATM. Additionally, you can have the bulk of your money invested in e-savings with a reasonable rate of interest and move it into the flex account as and when you need it.

I'm not sure what 'xchange chgs' means, but the best is probably VISA in terms of the number of places it is accepted and the number of travel related facilities you have access to.

Ah, just got it I think - I think maybe you mean exchange charges? If so, yeah, still VISA. They are all much of a muchness - be warned that you will take a hit if withdrawing cash abroad no matter who you go with, and so you need to trade off between minimising visits to the cash machine and minimising the amound of cash on your person.

I wasn't meaning to sound pompous or smart-*rsey above btw, I really didn't know what you meant!

For using abroad.. DO not carry the DISCOVER as most all businesses, etc will not accept this card.. Most businesses when I was travelling in Europe and Asia, DO NOT like to take the American Express and I think this is because the American Express charges those businesses too much.... I would carry(and do) either the Master Card or the Visa card and the exchange rate is the same on both

Nationwide building society does not charge 2.75% or over handling fee, so you only have to pay what you spend. all other banks and credit card companies charge an extra amount for using their card abroad.
