All the above ways of cooking rice will result in sticky rice. The best way is to take 1 measure of rice (cup, mug, whatever size is convenient) and to fry lightly in vegetable oil - only about 1 tablespoon or less for 2 mins. Meanwhile boil some water in a kettle, and when it is boiling, add one and a half measures of boiling water to the rice. Do not remove the lid.Boil for ten minutes, then turn off the heat, and leave to stand for a further ten. The rice will be fluffy and not at all sticky - all the water will be absorbed and there will be none to drain off, as the oil coating prevents the starch from coming out. I picked this up from indian and chinese cookery.

Use a maximum of 100g rice for each adult person (this will give you excess)
Check what volume your rice occupies in a measuring cup (you will need twice that volume of liquid).
Put some olive oil in a saucepan, heat it up.
If you like a bit of extra flavour in your rice, chuck in a chopped up garlic clove and half an onion, plus salt and pepper or maybe a stock cube. Some people also add tomato puree...
Fry this up for a few minutes, then add the rice. Stir until the ingredients and the rice are nicely mixed and crackling away.
Pour in your 2 volumes of water - cold. If you like, some of this volume can be taken up by something more tasty - cream, coconut milk...
Stir to make sure nothing's sticking, then bring to the boil.
Put on a lid and let simmer on low heat for 12 minutes, not more or less.
Turn the heat off and leave covered for a few minutes.
Serve, eat, enjoy.

The best loose rice I have ever had is Tesco own brand (American easy cook long grain rice) in a blue bag. Depending how many you are cooking for, boil a large saucepan of water (add little salt) then add rice (there are measures per person on side of bag). Add to boiling water and the secret is to stir it just the once when added. Simmer for 15 minutes then drain and serve-perfect every time!!

Usually with long cooking rice ( which I recommend, no minute rice etc). You use 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water. Add a little salt, pepper, parsley or dried chives while cooking. Your rice will look pretty and taste good. Your rice will take around 15 - 20 minutes to cook. Start your rice in cold water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and cover. Check rice periodically but do not stir. When most of the water has been absorbed taste your rice. If it is not tender enough add a little water and cook 5 more minutes. Make sure it does not burn. Fluff with a fork before serving.

For perfect basmati rice every time it's easy. Put 1 part rice and 1 and a half parts boiling water in a pan, return to boil, stir once, cover and simmer on LOWEST gas for 12 minutes. Job done. I find a mug of rice is enough for 2-3 giving generous portions.
I think it's hilarious that you can get "easy cook" or boil in the bag rice when it's so easy to do anyway.
I'd love to know what kind of rice you end up after simmering for 20 minutes! I'm going to try it next time I do rice.

Cooking rice is very easy. The instructions are on the box. Boil some water in a sauce pan, then add the rice with a little salt and butter.Stir in the rice and bring back to a boil. Reduce heat and cover. Let it simmer for about twenty minutes or until water is gone.

For long grain rice, you need twice as much water as rice. So for 1 cup of rice, you'll need 2 cups of water.
On your stovetop, in a saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add 1 cup of rice. Cover. Reduce heat to low. Simmer for 20 minutes and turn off the heat. Rice is done.

Follow directions on the box or bag. Most of the above answers are right. Just a couple of hints. During the 20 minute simmer time use as low a flame as possible and never remove the cover for the 20 minutes.

Cook a mug of rice per person, put it in a saucepan, cover it with water and cook it until you can turn the saucepan on it's side without any water running out from the rice (i.e. all the water has been absorbed)

chop an onion into small pieces and fry them in the pan with a little olive oil and add salt. let them fry for a while untill just going brown. get some basmati rice. one small cup full per person
and wash and rinse it to get all the starch out. then stir it in the pan with the onions and then pour warm water over the rice and fill just over the rice level.
keep lid on the pan and cook quite high untill rice soaks up all the water. your rice should be nice and fluffy .
if its to watery then take the lid off for a few mins it will dry out.
i made some last night and i always get it right !!!
