The first point is that not all Buddhist monks wear orange robes.

As has been pointed out, some in Japan wear black (and not robes in the sense of Thai, Sri Lanka etc), and there was a sect (Chinese I think) that wore blue. Thai monks wear robes that are orangish brown. In Tibet is predominantly red and in Sri Lanka is more Saffron (the classic 'saffron robe').

Although one might apply all sorts of after-the-fact explanations, the colour does not have any great spiritual significance, although some people might find a certain inspiration from the choice of colour. The robes were traditionally dyed using whatever was the local cheapest colour. It was helpful to have all the bhikkhu's dressed in a recognizable way - so local colour customs arose.

In Thailand the colour comes from the heartwood of the Jackfruit tree, and since this natural dye varies in intensity, so robes also have some natural variation.

Lay followers in SE Asia usually wear white.

I think it has more to do with the culture they come from. Some Japanese Buddhist monks wear black or a brown/purpleish colour. Some colours are particular to the rank of the monk.

I'm only guessing, in Colour studies Orange means life, truth, vibrance and Energy! That is possibly why they wear it and I'm sorry if I offend anyone.
I also know that Colours can mean different things in different cultures. Traditionally in Western societies white is the colour signifiying purity and virginity and worn by brides. In the East the Colour red is used to represent the same things !!
