I was told by a Psychologist that depression is anger turn inward on the self. Think about it.......
Some anger is not acknowledged openly for some reason or another. Maybe we feel guilty about it, or feel it is inappropriate, or should not be directed at a certain person, a parent perhaps. Most of this is unconscious of course. So we bury it.
The anger may be the result of something that was hurtful to us. Keeping it inside or directing at our self feels safer than directing it outward. Unable to resolve our anger we may be overcome with feelings of helplessness. We may feel powerless, unable to direct the course of our life. We may become depressed.
The answer may lie in appropriate expression of the anger and the frustration we may be feeling. Not that we should blow up and tell someone off, but maybe just to talk about what angers us and work through methods to better manage it. We will then feel in control and more self-directed in our lives and this will hopefully alleviate the depression.

You are what you think every day. Think bad and bad will surely follow. Think good and good will follow, it is as simple as that.
If you keep telling yourself life is miserable and your depressed of course you will stay that way. You are convincing yourself to be miserable.
.
Read some self help and meditation books/tapes.
Try reading The Power of your subconcious mind by Dr Joseph Murphy.
I swear by it
To answer your question you are in control of your thoughts therefore you cause the depression and you can cause happiness in just the same way.

It can be several things....
it can possibly be just an inbalance of some of the chemicals in the brain, that will just need to be rebalanced by a short coarse of drugs.
Also it could be that one is going through puberty, that can be unbalancing.
May be it might be an actual event in your life, i.e. death, divorce or anything monumental that could disrupt your well being.
Remember, you are a beautiful person and there is always someone there to talk to.
Find peace!!!!

It is essentially a health problem. Everyone has a different threshold for withstanding stress. But depression can be treated and controlled.

many times it seems depression is ultimately cause by lack of trust in God... people let all the bad get them so far down, and while they fall into depression, they aren't asking God, and trusting that He will help...
