I agree with cat lover. It used to mean a jacket/sports coat and slacks (no tie required). But formality has changed so much (especially for your generation) so I think it's best to ask your friend his definition of semi-formal and go from there. According to the young men (?) listed above, khakis and a polo shirt may be appropriate. I would still say no t-shirt, jeans, or tennis shoes.

Semi Formal means a suit, button down shirt and tie but your friend might have a different idea. I would ask him or her.

PS: A sportscoat and khaki's are not semi formal. That is considered business casual.

Strange for an 18 year old to have a semi-formal. But a suit is fine. Coat and tie.
But saying that it is semi-formal also means that he is expecting a nice gift. So don't forget.

Semi-formal USED to mean a sport coat, shirt & tie, and nice pants, or a suit. Who knows what it means to young people any more! Ask your friend what he means---then you will know for sure!

Have a good time!

A black suit, white shirt, black polished tied shoes, and a dressy tie. The jacket can be single or double -breasted, whatever the style is this week.
The ladies will be wearing cocktail dresses.

A dress coat, not black. Black slacks, socks and shoes. A white shirt and tie to blend with the jacket.
