According to the Bible, Hagar was the servant of Abraham's wife Sarah before she became Abraham's wife.
Sarah suggested to Abraham that he sleep with Hagar so he could have a child. That's why Abraham married her. Hagar continued to be Sarah's servant though.
(To all my fellow Christians: Abraham DID marry Hagar. It says so in Genesis 16, 3)

The Torah and the bible concur on the fact that Hagar was Sarah's slave\servant girl. The Jew are the direct descendants of Isac(Whom God chose)....now if Jews are the direct descendants of Abraham wouldn't the Torah be more correct, why would a son lie against his father. Muhammed who is not a descentant of Isac changed the wording of the Torah to make it look like Ishmael was the chosen one....Islam was only started in Arabia many centuries after Judaism was established...before that time the Arabians used to worship the moon God, Allah...they did not even know who Abraham was untill Muhammed copied the Jewish and Christian books...but the Jews knew of Abraham and his life long before Islam came into existance.

Hagar was given to Sarah as a maidservant.
Abraham (pbuh) married Hagar, on Sarah's suggestion.
Both these women were pious and God-Conscious.
Hagar was thus Abraham's (pbuh) wife not servant/slave.

Hagar wasn't married by God's laws to Abraham and out of convenant she started as his servant girl and became his mistress and concubine which is different than a wife. they used her to try to have children but she rebelled and became full of pride and arrogance to the point where god himself told Abraham to send her away as the coveant would be with Issac and not Ishmael. Sarah would have had children sooner if Abraham would have stood up for her as his wife and fought for her when He traveled, but he was a bit of a coward and told her to only say that she was his sister. so he wouldn't have to fight. god had to constantly defend her and repair any damage because of the way he treated her.

china_rose is correct. Abraham never married Hagar. She was Sarah's servant. She became Abraham's concubine. Ishmael was a child born out of wedlock, commonly known as a bastard.

She was a slave girl, who he married later with the consent of his wife Sarah. Hagar aws the mother of Abraham's first son. They do not consider her to be a wife they are more comfortable with her being a slave, in essence they are saying Abraham fornicated(God forbid!) and yet they called him "father of faith" can you see the contradition?
They have been brainwashed & programmed for centuries.....and intellectual bondages are harder to shatter: the slave himself fights to retain them.

Yes I have often wondered this also. Does the Bible say she was his servant??? It really is quite an insult to such an excellent and faithful woman.

No, it says that Abram knew her. As in got intimate with her. There is nothing in that chapter, or in Genesis, that says that He took her as his wife.
Please read it again.
