Had a pop up yesterday when switching on my lap top to say AVG free Edition would be stopped in Jan.07 and to go to their site re another edition. Am completely hopeless at understanding the jargon. Will the new one have to be reinstalled and does it cost anything ?

Do not worry, it's only that your version (7.1) will cease but the good news is that you will be able to get the new version, 7.5 for free from here http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

The unfastened version of avg is merely an antivirus, reckoning on what in effective condition of norton you have you may to get an firewall and anti- spyware besides. you will pay bypass get the two a sort of from avg, despite the fact that that variety of defeats the "unfastened" section.

Important points to note first: Knock off things like Zone Alarm and OnSpeed if you have them as they will prevent the installation.
Then simply do as the installation thing says, making sure you tick the REPAIR box. If I can do it, anybody can ! It's easy - just make sure you go to the download the FREE version boxes. Good luck.
By the way, this version replaces the existing one in case you're not sure.

The current version, 7.1, is being replaced with version 7.5. You will need to download the new version (see linked "source") in order to continue using their free virus scanner.

Yes you will have to install the "new" version of the software, but it is still free. They also have a new anti-spyware software that you can download for free as well.

The most important thing to keep in mind, regardless of which anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and firewall you use ( http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/default.mspx ) is to keep it UPDATED, just as it is important to make sure you have all windows critical and security updates. + =
