You might use a 'colorization program' to convert a photo into Warhol style. The best commercial one is 'coloriage'. You will have to search for freeware/shareware ones. However, the method is that coloriage uses is superb and much easier than other programs. If you can get it, I would. There is a mac version with a 10 day free trial. I've used it very succesfully to colorize old victorian black and white photos of my family, such as a lady in a purple dress, green potted plants, etc.

You may achieve some warhol effects with a general purpose photo-editing program by reducing the image to a depth/palette of 4 colors. e.g. the campbells soup can. There are ways to select which 4 colors are used or you can flood-fill colored areas. I use paint shop pro on the PC to do this. Is there a mac version?

I don't know of any program for other styles like oil-paint, charcoal drawing, etc. However, if you google for these terms + 'painting software mac', you made find a good program.

The expensive commercial program photoshop can do a whole range of effect (charcoal, etc), and so can any program using 'photoshop compatible plugins'. One of these is the free open-source GIMP photo-editing program. It aims to be a free replacement for Photoshop. Installing it looks like a pain in the backside, but there are installer programs that people have written. Ask for help from other people on here if needed.

If you've got a recent iMac or laptop (with built in camera) you should have Apple software called Photobooth installed which will do this effect.

If not, any free image editor that allows you to "posterize" will do the trick.
