I currently have a 4 year old male cat who doesn't really like other animals, but I really want a kitten and wondered whether he would get on better with a male or female?

The male cat I have has been neutered and I would make sure I had the same done to the new one (whichever it was) as soon as I could.
The only animals I have seen him around are bigger than him which is why he is scared but I thought he might like a little kitten coz he would be the boss?

I'm not sure that it really matters. I think in due course he may get used to another cat. The thing to watch for is he may spray to mark his territoty (even neutered males do this) which is pretty unpleasant. If he isn't nuteured then introducing a male is probably a bad idea and you'd need to spey a female or you'll have a constant supply of kittens! Try not to lavish too much affection on your new addition and leave out the original kitty - they do get jealous!

This is a difficult one as your cat doesn't like other animals. I have a male and a female cat and introduced a pup with no problems at all. I have a friend who has three cats, 2 males and 1 female and all were from the cat rescue and had never met before. You might be lucky and your cat may live happily with a new member or he may just stay away from it. If you decide to get a female then as long as you have her spayed you will have no problems. Is there no way you can have a trial of a kitten with your cat? It's up to you , you know your cat best and I wish you a happy outcome whatever you decide to do.

Hard to say since he may just hate all other cats. If you know he doesn't like animals he may not deal well with it.
I've got 5 cats now (a mom and her 4 'children') and I've definitely had more problems with the girls than the boys. The boys are less confrontational and very laid back. The girls always provoke the fights and started spraying to mark their territory (the boys never sprayed)
The mother cat is the worst and hates everyone. She's actually responsible for killing a male cat I used to have. He never fought back. She attacked him in the neck/chest area and I never noticed the wound because he was a Persian. It got infected and he suffered kidney failure from the infection (he only had one functioning kidney to begin with)
From my experience I'd say get a male although they are usually the ones that have the spraying problems.

I have four cats, 2 males and 2 females, all neutered..
Males: They are affectionate. They think you were put on earth to stroke and pet them. They are good hunters but can also be scaredy cats. Down sides is that they sometimes spray and it smells really bad.
Females: They are more contrary and only want petting on their terms. They are more independant. If they wee on the lawn, it leaves brown patches.
Each cat is an individual with their own personality. Both sexes bring their love with them.

I would not get another cat. If your male does not like other animals he may be very upset with having to share his domain with another one. You will also probable favor the kitten, if only to keep it safe when it is small, and your current cat will get very jealous.
If you absolutley must, I would get a female. He may take to her. Make sure they are both spayed/neutered. You should also make an agreement with yourself (and your cat) that if it truly distresses him you will give her away. It would not be fair to either of them to live feeling threatened. If you must give her away, find a good home, do not take her to the pound, that would not be fair to her.

You Should get what ever you feel you can handle better.. I have 2 females and a male and there is really know difference between how they act. It all depends on ur decision...(I would suggest getting 2 cats so one will never be lonely and will have a friend preferably a sibling)

I would get a female because the older cat will want to be top cat and the female will accept it. A male might fight him for dominance.

i have two male cats and have just introduced a male kitten to them they get along fine and play with each other. when i lived at my mums i introduced a male to a female and they've never got on i say go for a male there more loving too .

Male! As long as you get him spayed! My male cat was always more affectionate than his sister but maybe that was just a personality thing! And you won't be lumbered with a litter of kittens (unless you want to be- could be cute!!!)

Neither - and if you get a female you may end up with more than you bargained for - cats are very Territorial and wont like new additions to the house
