The first sign a species is becoming sentient is when they have evolved to the point where they can abstract enough to invent a god. The first time a species achieves sentient maturity is when they get rid of their gods. It is just a matter of them not being as highly evolved as the rest of us. They probably should be classified as Proto-Human until they give up silly god concepts and join the world of rational discourse.

People have religion because either they want to, for their own feeling of well-being, or because they feel compelled to; they use religion to fill a gap in their lives perhaps, or maybe they just like the thought of having a higher power/spirit/whatever they believe in in their lives.
Perhaps to many people it is obvious that religion is a 'con', but remember people don't base a belief on facts, it's what they believe, and that's something that can't be proven nor disproven by looking in a book.
It seems obvious to me, you have a closed mind, or maybe you are trying to cause controversy by raising questions about religion...good for you.

There are how differnet religions all claiming to be right? so basically they are all unproven theories.
Why do people play lottery and scratch cards with their last pound? People always want to hope or dream and it's a form of escaping, believing that there is more to life and that we don't just disappear or rot away when we die.
Perhaps we don't, but there is not a single word or gram of hard proven evidence to suggest otherwise. Dreams or visions in people heads are not evidence, just a sign of there own belief in it.
Religion was a simple way to explain a complex world and provide rules to the un-educated many years ago. Now we have science and education. Religion is no longer required and is in fact holding back so many societies.

To believe means accepting something based on e.g. revelation written or oral, tradition, philosophy, statement etc. Believing is not the same as knowing, though it might be a subjective knowledge based on one's experience. Some people believe because they might see a friend/supporter in a god, whom they cannot find among people (it is not a healthy motivation). Some people might feel rejected etc. so they would look for a safety in some form of a structure. However, I do believe there are many people who are well-formed human beings (self-realised) who are able to be committed to a religion with a great benefit for themselves and others. They usually are kind, gentle and very open-minded, never forcing others to believe in what they do...

If you are an Atheist or an Agnostic, then you also have a religion so you just included yourself in that 'deluded enough' bracket.
If you think that it is an 'out of date con' then you probably haven't studied it.
But then if you are deluded enough to believe that the earth 'just happened' to land in the only spot in the universe that could possibly support human life, then feel free. And if you want to believe that you came from monkeys, then again feel free.
Personally I find it rather insulting to think that I came from monkeys. And then of course, the way that mankind is going now, the monkeys would probably be insulted if they knew that people liken us to them.

The people who believe show that faith is neither out of date, nor a con. Their faith is real, life-changing and healing. Christianity takes people from all races, nations, classes and backgrounds and joins them in one family. It replaces prejudice, bigotry, judgementalism and exclusion with love. It welcomes the homeless, the prisoner, the addicts, the outcasts and gives them a home where they are welcomed as equals in the sight of Jesus Christ.
The results of living the Christian life are love - even for those that hate us, a positive outlook, a calmness that cannot get upset by life's troubles, being able to see the best in people, helping one another, not getting upset or annoyed - whatever the provocation, being able to take everything with a sense of humour - not insisting things are done our way, being true to our word - trustworthy and not giving in to our own appetites and desires. Not much wrong with that, is there? (paraphrase from Galatians 5).
Love All, Forgive All, Show Mercy, Judge No-One

here's the real thing... How come there are people deluded enough to reject religion so blindly as you do? You can't classify religion as one big subject, you need to clarify whether its christianity, judaism, islam, zen, etc... Each have many different beliefs and practices... just like psychology, and science, realism, and moralism...
Buddhism is my religion, but most people who understand a little bit about the world know that if fits in with science and logic, and fits with the moralist way of seeing life... It is both a psychology and a philosophy of life... other religions also have ways of representing deities as way of understanding mind and a higher goal, examples for us to follow... Einstein said, "Religion without science is lame, Science without religion is stupid." Hope this helps...

Your right Jamie. these bibles and quorans and other scriptures should be in the library under the fiction section.
They are a made up belief system in order to control the masses and prevent anarchy. The poor had to believe in something in the old days. Look at third world countries they get food from charities and religious organisations looking to convert them to their faith.
I suppose if I was starving and Bin Laden gave made lots of food and fancy clothes I might convert to Islam.
OK thats taking it a bit far.
I dont believe in any religions.

Well, considering the many believers it's certainly not as obvious as you'd like to believe!
Furthermore, there is absolutely no evidence that all religion is false.
We may not be able to prove scientifically that God exists but you can't prove the opposite either.
Maybe you should try to keep on open mind about things.

Did you know that aheists is a form of religion, Because they are letting satan use their minds just like you did just then, Friend, You say there is no proof that there is a God, I have more proof that there is a GOD, then you do to dis-prove that God does not exist, If you don't believe in God then why do you say that you know that religion gives us hope, & you say this book is outdated, my Friend, it is never outdated, It is you that are outdated & overdated, now come back with another question on this subject & I will give you all the proof you want & I want you to give me Facts & not your sayings.
