This is for a semi-casual party at my apartment with a bunch of guests. I'm looking for original ideas for a theme or for what to do at the party.

How fun!

Have a "decades" party and ask each couple or each small group to dress up in clothes from decades starting with the 20s (flapper dresses, etc.) 30s, 40s (zoot suits) 50s (poodle skirts, greaser look) 60s (Hippie look) 80s (neon, pegged jeans, Madonna "materian girl" look)

Then serve appetizers and drinks based on each decade.

Like Fondue from the 60s, etc. go to a cooking website or google "appetizer of the 1920s" to find out certain appetizers and drinks that were popular then.

Or have each guest do the research for their assigned decade and have them dress up AND bring the appetizer. People like to contribute and the party would also be exciting and easier for you because there would be a cool mix of things to eat!

Have fun

Ok our town is kinda like pleasantville in a way. My family throws huge parties and my favorite by far was the Jungle Safari themed. Everyone always does like the hula theme and the new years theme. Have an animal party where your guest dress up in tacky animal print. Dont go with toga. Its way too frat party. I loved seeing our neighbors who are really uptight people dressed in leopard and zebra. Buy some fake vines and have little animals around and like safari animal music on. That would be a lot of fun.

I throw a new year's bash every year. We have done the 80's. It was not nearly as fun as it sounds... However, I was sent New Year's Eve around the world via e-mail. Basically, it starts at 10am with Australia and ends at 6am New Years Day. You celebrate a different country every hour with a cultrually themed drink. (ie Foster's beer for Australia) E-mail me if you want the chart.

A good easy theme is Hawaiian, almost everyone has something they could wear to this. Also I have had parties were everyone had to dress up like their favorite celebrity. You could also make for friends dress up as each other and then make them guess who they are.

As corny as this may sound, the most fun I have ever had at a new years eve party, was a toga party.
Hope this helps.
