I have a male red spotted bengal cross, 7 months old who eats fake fur. We have to hide anything that has fake fur on it as he tears it off and eats it, he also eats paper. Does anybody know why?

Hi there...some of the Bengals like the texture of faux fur because they think of it as real prey, however the paper is due to the noise it makes. Your Bengal may also have a condition known as PICA where cats like to chew, lick, suck on foreign substances that are not good for them. It's best to take up objects such as these items (kitty-proofing) and offer alternative toys which are safe to chew and bite.

Some people find that applying a product called Granick's Bitter Apple (found worldwide at any pet store) helps deters the undesired/bad or dangerous habits. Here's the product's website so you can learn more on how it works. http://www.bitterapple.com/

Here's an article by University of California Davis about PICA and suggestions on how to manage it for your Bengal: http://www.vmth.ucdavis.edu/home/beh/feline_behavior/pica.html

This condition is called Pica and is quite common in Oriental and Asian cats. This condition is most commonly found in Siamese cats.

Try to restrict access to the things your cat likes to eat but shouldn't, and also try to redirect this energy into something positive like playing a fun game with him. Good luck!

Hi there

I have 2 Bengal Cats and they are the same

Bengal cats (as is the name) originated in the far east and are known for their hunting abilities, as their sharp claws are used to pick fish from rivers using their paws

Your cat will have this instinct to do this as it is common of the breed, however catnip toys and some small plastic balls with bells inside should help

Andy

PS, it may be useful to purchase a fur scratching pole, as my cats use this to scratch with

come on, no cat EATS fur.
if your cat is tearing those furry things off, maybe it just some kind of play and animal instinct. let it be, buy your cat some furry toys to play with
