The name CYRUS is originally a Persian name, NOT Greek (though our form comes to us through the Greek).

"From (Kyros), the Greek form of the Persian name Kûrush, which may mean "far sighted" or may be related to the Persian word khur "sun". The name is sometimes associated with Greek (kyrios) "lord". This was the name of several kings of Persia, including Cyrus the Great, who conquered Babylon. He is famous in the Old Testament for freeing the captive Jews and allowing them to return to Israel."

Notes:

1) Oberve that the association with the Greek word for "lord" is simply because the Greeks found that the Persian name sounded a lot like the Greek word for lord, and probably also because the Persians they knew with this name were kings, so "lord" seemed fitting. All that is to say that the name Cyrus does not MEAN "lord".

2) I don't generally trust the "baby name" books and sites -- they are very uneven (sometimes right, sometimes dead wrong, often sloppy). Best site on the web for this kind of question may be behindthename.com, which is why I quote from it above.
