Total cholesterol on it's own is not a true predictor of risk of future cardiovascular disease (ie heart attack, strokes) You need a full starving test to include a full lipid profile. Ideally your result should be below 5mmols/l, but average UK levels are around 6. You need to find out your Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL's) the "bad" cholesterol which should be less than 2mmols/l and find out what your High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) or "good" cholesterol which should be above 1.1 in males and 1.2 in females.

For a true predictor most risk charts need to know your HDL/Chol ratio, ie the amount of good cholesterol in ratio to your total cholesterol. eg If your total cholesterol is 5 and your HDL is 2, your ratio would be 5/2 = 2.5. A ratio of 4 and about puts you at risk.

Also you will need to know your Triglyceride level (the sugary fat) this should be less than 2.

Please don't rush off to your GP to go on medication as this can cause more harm than good if not appropriate.

Cholesterol is just one risk factor. Your GP will need to take into account any other risks you may have before giving precriptions out eg Family history, age, sex, blood pressure, smoking, exercise, stress, waist circumference.

Keep active and eat a balanced diet high in omega-3 oils and fruit and veg and that should help lower the result. Avoid the cholesterol lowering products (margarines, yoghurts, cheeses etc) as they are just sales gimmicks and do nothing apart from lower your bank balance!!

Natural Cholesterol Guide?

Yes, yes, yes and yes. As a nurse who has worked in coronary care and other areas it will amaze you how many people are admitted every day from heart attacks and strokes or die from high cholesterol. It is a silent killer which can be stopped and treated with either medication or diet and exercises. I have seen fit, vegetarians who ran every day have a heart attack and are shocked to learn they have high cholesterol. They usually have cut out all fats in their diets including the good ones. Your body produces cholesterol and you need to have the good fats, as from olive oils, almonds and seeds (lots more) that will control the amount of cholesterol. I have mine checked six monthly because after a few years of night duty, bad eating and no exercises had to go on medication for both cholesterol and high blood pressure. I use to look at people who had to have open heart surgery and swore I would never be them. Nearly did or worse.

Hi!
Yes, it's up but you can get it down quite naturally by eating the right things. Look for foods that naturally decrease LDL - 2 raw carrots a day bring levels down quickly. Garlic is good, foods high in fibre & fruits with pectin such as grapefruit are great. Add more beans & lentils as good sources of soluable fibre. Healthy fats are found in oily fish, avacados. Include nuts as these are good for you. Artichokes eaten regularly can help keep cholesterol under control. Hope this helps.

You don’t need to exercise for long periods of time. Short, sharp sets of exercise will produce better results in case you work hard. Get a bypassing rope, skip for two moments, do push ups for about a minute, skip for two minutes, rest for example minute. Then change the push around something else like sit ups as well as do the set again. Repeat it five times and it’s a fast, effective workout that will progress results than a long manage or swim.

It's should around 5 but you need to take certain factors into consideration. Certain ethnic groups normally have higher cholesterol but if you are worried you should go and speak to your GP or nurse if the GP has one. They will be able to advise your further.

Ideally it should be 5.0 or less. No need to panic but it would do you no harm to get it lower.
If you're worried go seek medical advice instead of asking well-intentioned amateurs about medical matters.
