The reasons are:
1. Ignorance
2. Some people like to make generalization without checking the facts
3. People who are closed minded but believe that they are open minded.
4. Not many exposition in the media regarding true Islam.

I never thought they were from Africa, but it is very obvious that they are Arab. Saudi Arabia is Muslim country! I know this because I have had family in the US Air Force that have been to the middle east and say that it is Muslim. One has been to Saudi Arabia, and also don't forget that Bin Laden is from Saudi Arabia and is Muslim.

people are just ignorant... i don't mean that in a rude sense but i mean that ppl just don't have the knowledge that only 20% of Muslims are in the Arab world.
i myself have been American my whole life (i'm a Chicagoan if you wanna get specific :) but b/ i wear hijab ,ppl compliment my english all the time now. usually i just laugh....
another thing is that Muslims didnt have a significant population until the 70's..... it will take them time to adjust but someday they'll grab on to the basics

Bcause islam is imposition of arab way of life & their tribal culture. They impose their language as uslim god understand only arabic & their dogmas of marriage like having 4 wives atc. the converts elsewhere adopted to this lifestyle as req. by islam

another idiot insult I usually get online is "go back to your country!" when I'm no where near the US.
just today my new employee asked if I was Pakistani. lol
it is so hard for them to imagine Muslims anything other than Arab. shows their ignorance.

because thats how lazy we are on knowing and finding out the truth... we just know they're from a different country and those are the first things that come to mind..
