I think it just depends on the brand. Before I went strictly to cell phone, I paid over $50 for a cordless phone and within 6 months it was shot. My mom and dad have used the same cordless phone (one that only cost $20) for over 5 years and my mom is always calling someone!

havent ran into one that has went bad from use usually a customer will spill something on it and that will cause the buttons to stick or the internal components to short out.
