My granddaughter just turned 7 and I was a loss of what to get her. At the last moment, I picked up one of those Barbie Heads (almost human size) that she can put make-up on and do her hair -- she loves it. Her mom says she is in her room all the time just redoing her looks. Best money I have spent in a long time.

I always make up goody totes for the girls in my family.
Buy a clear tote and letter stickers and put their name on the tote and cover the letters with clear plastic tape to seal. Then i get things they use to fill it up, hair clips, hair ties, leave in conditioner, shampoo, a new tooth brush, an age appropriate craft,( markers and craft paper, etc..) and a $10 dollar gift card to their favorite store so they can have a bit to spend on a later date. You can expand on the items or the amount depending on how much you want the whole gift to cost, have fun with it.

my daughter is 7! the big thing she has on her "holiday list" is "TINKERBELL'S PIXIE LAND" i know that's not the proper name for it... but it's a bunch of little fairies, including Peter Pan's "Tink". it's like a magical forest. it's $49.00 at Toys R Us. there are accessories (of course:) that range from $10-$25 each. my daughter is a "girly girl" and has always like Barbie's, Fairytopia, Mermadia... this set COULD EASILY be played with Fairytopia and Mermadia if your daughter has those Barbie sets already! it's such a cute set... it will be under the tree this year!

Good for you for making it a surprise!
Most kids that age like arts and crafts. There are some great kits out there that really keep kids busy and happy.

You didn't say what your price range is.
Nintendo DS is a popular hand-held game unit: approx. $130
(they come in pink, too)
Games for the Nintendo DS: $20-40
ATM bank (Toys R Us: $30)
It's a toy bank but they can practice using an ATM machine.
Ice skates or inline skates (if you know her shoe size)
If she likes dolls, an American Girl Doll or clothes for it.
