At the moment the UK doesn't have ID Cards. However the Government would like to introduce cards linked to a National Identity Register (NIR) which will contain or link to information on your current and previous residences, shopping habits, religion, ethnicity, sexual preferences, medical history, political leanings etc.

Personally I think this database is going to be a vast invasion of privacy for very little benefit (the Government has already admitted the NIR won't stop terrorism, benefit fraud, identity theft or illegal immigration).

Not as such in Australia YET, but we have to have so many other government cards, so they would not have a problem knowing who we are. The present and past governments have tried.
