Hello! I have an 8 month old, neutered and housetrained Bichon Frise. He never has accidents in our house. However, the last few times we have gone to my husband's family's house for dinner, he immediately runs over to their sofa and poops or pees on it or heads to the bedroom and pees on their bed.
I would really appreciate constructive help on this! Why is my dog doing this?? What can I do to prevent my doggie from doing this in the future? Thanks so much!

Most dogs will go where they know is off limits if they are mad. My dog would pee on my bed if I left her at the vet overnight. He may be upset that he's not at home. Take him on LOOOONNG walks. He will probably hold it as long as possible to get a chance at the couch, especially being a male dog who is more territorial. I don't think it is a scent issue since he poops too, which dogs don't tend to use to mark their territory.

Could be he smells another animal that's been on the sofa and bed and is 'marking' the territory as his now. Just because he's housetrained, remember, that's in YOUR house. You might need to do some more of that training for your in-laws house. When he's older he will likely understand that housetraining is for wherever you take him. I suggest having him go potty before he enters the in-laws house, if you don't already. And how excited does he get once he's inside? Maybe it's a case of his being over-excited. If that's the case, try to have everyone act calmly around him when he's first there and not letting him get too wound up.

Dogs have a keen nose and probably have a mild distaste for your inlaws. Dogs are feircely loyal and are probably defending your honour!

She probably has a cat. The dog is emphasizing his dominance.
