i just adopted a puppy yesterday, and i am wondering what the best way to potty train him is?

i got him to pee on a newspaper once, but then he went on the floor a couple of times. i picked him up while he was going and placed him on the newspaper.

also, he's a yorkie/maltese mix. i heard yorkie's are kind of tough to train, so any suggestions would be nice!

ps - to all you smartasses, yes, i know you take him outside to pee. hahaha very funny. and btw - youre welcome for your 2 point sarcastic answer ahead of time.

to the serious people, thanks a bunch :)

Patience and consistency are key. LOTS of praise when he "goes" where you want. Do not scold him for going elsewhere unless you catch him in the act (he will not remember and may get spooked if you scold for past wrongs). No matter what anyone says, please don't rub his nose in it. I used to bring my dog to it, point and say no or What did you do? (he understood that when he was older).

Take him out 10-15 minutes after eating and immediately when finished playing rough and after naps. If he stops and sniffs around during play, get him OUTSIDE!

Oh and saying gotta go out? or Go potty helps as well!

Again, lots of praise, patience and consistency and you will have a potty-trained little boy! Good luck!!

Hey,

As someone else has mentioned consitency and patience are the key.

Patience because it won't happen overnight and even when you think your pup is trained he may still have the odd accident.

Consistency: When training always use the same command - if you take him outside after eating or a nap always say the same thing either 'potty' or 'tiolet' etc. It won't be too long before he recognises the word

When you first start training him you can try for a designated area - cover say an area by the back door with newspaper and always take him to that spot - always use lots of praise.

I can't say that I've heard one breed of dog is harder to train than another in this respect

Hope that helps a little - good luck with it, it can be a trying time but usually it doesn't last long .

crate training, just make sure the crate is the right size, just enough room to stand up, turn around, and lay down. Put your new pup on a daily schedule much like a new baby, and only feed 2 times a day (if they eat and drink all day they have to use the bathroom all day) and for small puppies it only takes about 15-20 min. for there food to digest so be ready to take them outside. Also make sure you give them a treat EVERY time they use the bathroom outside, small treats you don't want them to fill up again because they would just have to go to the bathroom again.Cheerios (no sugar added) work great . Good luck

I have a four month historic Pomeranian (I actually have a two yr historic Chihuahua and a two.five yr historic Japanese Spitz) and that i began off utilizing the potty pads!! I set them beside my again door so he went there to visit the bathroom. When i noticed him heading over there i might open the again door and allow him out. Now he simply is going and waits on the again door until i open it for him, now not extra potty pads.

I have an 8lb. Yorkie/Chihuahua mix. I have litter box trained her.
If you are interested in litter box training, I used this site and my puppy always uses the box now and it's great because she doesn't have to go out in the snow or rain.

We use a product from Purina that is basically a litter pan like cats use. You fill it with a product called "Second Nature". Our dogs learned to go in it rather quickly. Now they are house broke but we keep the pan for night time 'emergencies'.
