I just became a US permanent resident and had to sign up for selective service. Should there be a draft, I am wondering how conscripts are assigned to the various armed forces and their given roles.

For example, I am a Pilot, would that be considered or would I just end up being a GI?

Thanks!

I should add, it's not out of worry that I'm asking this question... purely out of curiosity. Also, I wouldn't mind being a fighter pilot - the wife however wouldn't be thrilled so my only chance would be a war against our friends in the "axis".

You would take an aptitude test to see what you'd be good at then they'd decide. If you were drafted it would probably be for two years and that would not give you time to go to military flight training so I suspect you would be placed somewhere in aviation other than as a pilot. If it came to being drafted you might be better off enlisting to be a pilot although it would be for a longer term.

If there is a war against Iran and North Korea, you will be sent there as your first assignment. It is exciting and full of adventures.

No. You would be drafted into the Army and then would probably fly for them.
