The rest of the nation is shouldering the burden for issues such as heart disease and diabetes which are directly related to weight. Some insurance companies charge more for people who smoke. Because weight is an absolutely controllable issue, shouldn't overweight people pay more for healthcare so that it is affordable to the rest of the nation who takes care of themselves?

Is it fair that people can stuff their faces until they die and we have to pay for it?

No Red, I totally agree with what princessan has so painstakingly given her time in answering your ill worded attempt to discredit those in society who thru no fault of their own are unfortunately obese.

I am also ex Nurse who have seen all shapes and sizes, not all thru poor diet/stuffing themselves either....genetics and medication plays a major part...

Maybe you will think more before asking this type of insensitve question again...then again maybe not as this question shows poor intellect....

as a nurse-i can tell you that not ALL people that are obese are this way by choice....

people with certain medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes, chronic high blood pressure and heart problems are plagued by obesity b/c their condition doesn't allow for proper exercise (it's too strenous for their bodies to handle) or b/c the medications they are taking cause uncontrollable weight gain.

this can also be genetic and is highly effected by cultural background (for example a high population of the hispanic community is unfortunately hit with diabetes).

i'm ashamed that you didnt do more research before you asked such a harsh question. people smoke by choice just as people drink and do illegal drugs by choice. i don't ever recall in my 8+ years of nursing experience, anyone asking to have obesity BY CHOICE or the medical conditions/illness that cause them to be obese

and just for example-i was put on medications a year ago for depression. i jog 2 miles a day in addition to working out for an hour. i have done this religiously for the past 10 years. i gained 10 pounds within 2 months of using my medication and that was WITH the constant exercise. fortunately due to genetics-i had a very small mom and i'm 5"1 and 100 pounds. But imagine being someone who can't work out b/c their heart or lungs aren't strong enough and then having to deal with their medication adding even more weight....

and also-diabetes and heart disease is more linked to genetics rather than diet. 90% of the people who have these-their families had or have it too. my dad is 48 and had two heart attacks in his lifetime. he's 5"10 and 150lbs. far cry from being obese-but yet has a permanent heart condition. come to find out my grandpa and grandma both had it too

please look further into things before you lash out at people-it isn't fair to judge someone without knowing their whole medical or family background....

Not all people choose to be overweight or obese. there are medical problems that can cause the weight problem as well as some medications. Lets see, a thyroid problem can make it very hard to lose weight. So, why should those people with a medical problem or taking certain medications because they HAVE to be charged a higher premium for healthcare.

Being obese is NOT a choice. Using that same kind of reasoning, all people whose parents had Cancer or heart decease should pay higher premiums for health care because they are at a higher risk.

no. they should not and i am not overweight. its like saying they are fat because they eat to much, not all do, there are medical reasons and genetic reasons why people put on weight as well as the obvious they eat to much but even that can be laid at the door of an eating disorder or depression.

people who are taller are more likely to bang thier heads than the rest of us average height people do we refuse or increase thier tax burden to compensate. LF

Red maybe your not overweight but I dont think you know what it feels like to be obese. It's a disorder as much as depression is. No one likes to be obese so please be more sensitive about this topic.
