It's actually the preachers who choose to distort the message that take away the responsibility.
These are the real hate-mongers of the world

Killing in the name of God (in a Christian sense) is just a bad excuse. Committed and honest Christian believers would never do such a thing, first of all because when God created human being His idea was to give him freedom of choice. So, if God gave us choice to believe or not, when did we earn the right to force other people to believe in God (surely God has means to do that, but He doesn't want to use them)? Faith is the connection between one person and God, and I can share my experience with other people, because it's something that I value as best thing that happened to me, and it's also my duty (according to Bible) to share it, but nothing more. I'm not allowed even to criticise others, not to mention something else.
So, as I already said, people who do those things "in the name of God" are misusing religion for their own fame, riches or who knows what kind of ideas. And responsibility is not taken away, it just looks that way at the present, but we will all be judged for our mistakes when the time comes.

It's not the religion that does anything, It's the people themselves who do to the religion.
Good luck trying to find a group that does well to the religion they're committed to.

The Bible teaches that God judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart and that he holds all of us to account. So, no at least in the case of Christianity, religion does not take away personal responsibility.

on the contrary it amplifies it if there was no sutch thing as the god we believe in .
then we,d only be held acountable by the things we get caught for we,d die free of all our deeds.
but god in what ever form you hold him adds conchience to the equasion and you have to accept responsibility for the things you get away with even athiests feel guilt and that like it or not is spirituality without it i sertinly would,nt have a clear rapsheet

My religion says 'turn the other cheek': does it make people do that? In other words people have choices, blaming religion is a cop-out.

There has always been greed and evil. I do believe that any religion that claims to be the only way to God is inaccurate, and is dangerous to the peace of mankind.
