This is a symptom of real diseases like sickle cell anemia, leukemia. If he tests negative via medical tests, then test for drugs, if that still isn't it, psychological exam for depression or a swift kick in the go button. Teens do require approximately 9 hours of sleep per night which is higher than the average for adults and everyone is different. Two days is not healthy. Test, then if not sick, push with guiding love.

Could he have glandular fever? I've had it some years back and it makes one debilitatingly tired, among other things.

Ask him to go to a GP and have a blood test done. Specifically request that the GP perform an LFT (Liver Function Test) and FBC (Full Blood Count). If he does have glandular fever, the Liver Function Test will show elevated enzyme levels.

If it is glandular fever, there's no medical cure but time (and TOTAL abstinence from alcohol) - anything from weeks to several months.

Is this after a weekend out??

If this is then he may be on drugs at the weekend such as cocaine or Ecstasy which will cause him to sleep for two days afterwards.

Monitor his mood swings, change in appearance, attitude etc

Doesn't your son have anything else practical to do then sleep? Doesn't he work at least? He needs to get his act together or you'll end up with a lazy bum for life. Either that, or he's onto something.

there could be many reasons, he could be depressed, he could be taking drugs, he may not have been sleeping properly and is catching up on his sleep. Or if he drinks, he could have damaged his liver, because one of the syptoms is tiredness. He may even have a slight problem with his heart. As your worried, encourage him to see a doctor, if not why not go yourself and explain your worries to the doctor yourself.

partying too much? depressed? low self-esteem? Tell him to go to the doctor or get a life! No offense to you. Mine is 19 and I had the same problem till I booted him out. Now he has to try and grow up and gets up at 5 a.m. to go to work. That used to be the time he'd go to bed!
