The Ambassador is the official representative of a country in another. Duties include dealing with trade, migration, mutual interests, etc.

However, in many cases, ambassadors are political appointees who are given the post as a payment for favors or contributions, and the actual work is done by professional career staff.

In countries whose relationship to the US is difficult, such as Russia, Middle East, Venezuela, etc, the ambassador often is a career professional diplomat, due to the sensitivity of the post.

Ambassadors manage bilateral relationships. Trade, security, consular matters, the lot...he takes responsibility, and tasks other diplomats to do the ground work.

He or she would represent their government in the host country, so they can usually apply discretion in how the relationship will pan out in negotiations.

They are expected to develop links not with the government, but the political, commercial, cultural, academic, media and other sector elites in a country, to understand the country and to be able to apply influence where necessary.

I think the main task the ambassador exists for every country is to help his/her countrymen who are working in a foreign country to provide him/her with all aid and legal protection.
Coupled with this, the ambassador also promotes the culture of his/her resective country, and promotes his country for tourism and business.
