Apply heat directly to neck maybe a heating pad 20-30 minutes 2-3 times a day. Long, hot shower with the water beating on the neck, slowly turn head side to side looking over each shoulder until the count of five. Repeat three times. Apply topical cream such as icy hot or tiger balm. Shut bedroom window because cold breezes may cause awkward positioning to keep warm resulting in a stiff neck. Get a proper pillow. Reserve couch for sitting, alot of times there is not enough room to lie down resulting in stiff neck. If the pain persists after this, make an appointment with your doctor.

Ice has been shown in research to be the best topical pain reliever for a stiff neck. Keep an ice pack on for 10-15 minutes. The cure for the core problem is some adjustments from a chiropractor.

I have been using olive oil with other essential oils in it: mainly lavender. I couldn't believe how much it helped. Also I use a hot shower on my neck and shoulders and I use thermocare air activated, one time use heating pads. I don't take the paper off the back. I can move it that way and put it on one shoulder then the other, etc. They stay hot 16 hours!
If this neck problem is recurring, take some magnesium supplements, too. Calcium allows your muscles to tense and magnesium lets muscles relax.

Keep a strong magnet on the bed with S POLE UP. Keep your neck on the Spole. Avoid magnet in near visinity of brain, eyes and heart.
If you can get a skilled acupuncturist go to him.
Massage and heating pad will also help.

I have had occasional, reoccuring neck problems myself. Generally after working out, but also occasionally after sleeping in an awkward position. I bought this massager and it's helped me more than hot baths, medication, therapy, or anything else. It basically just simulates a shiatsu neck massage, so you could have somebody just use their fingers to get the same effect. Good luck.
