If the inside is pressurized, the shape has to symmetrical in such a way, that will make the internal pressure distribute itself more or less equally. Else the can may burst where the pressure is more.
Also the shape has to have a logical design.
For the sake of argument, let us consider others shapes.
Spherical:: well that's not possible. Not very easy to hold !!
But yeah, from the physics point of view, its the ideal.
Cube and Cuboid :: The corners present can cause unequal pressure distribution, also the strain present may give rise to corrosion.
Elliptical:: no comments !!

The strength of a cylindrical can enables the companies to use a very thin layer of tin to produce sturdy containers. So its cost effective and efficient.
Also with a cylindrical can when you pop a hole anywhere on the top edge then the liquid will pour out in a nice even stream, which gives it the convenience factor for us consumers.
And last but not least is the ergonomic factor. They are easier to hold. Imagine a roomful of little kids drinking out of square cans. Ohhh the mess!

Many answers here refer to the cilinder as a "strong" shape, but why should it be stronger? Normally we have a number of forces, pressure, pulling force, sliding force and torsion. Esspeccially for resisting torsion, you need volume in your structure and a thin tin layer can't handle torsion very well. Choosing the shape of a cilinder however reduces the torsion to almost nill and leaves only pulling forces in the plane of the tin layer. You can imagine a test wher you put fluid into a plastic bag. The plastic can't deal with torsion at all, but can take some pulling force. The bag will assume a cilindric shape by itself.

Because cylinder is easy to hold while drinking compared to other shapes

because it is the strongest shape.
cylinders, arches and circle shapes are stronger than any other. with carbonated drinks especially - the package needs to be strong. You can juices and milk in rectangular packages because they dont need to be so strong
