I was told by a reliable friend that if I braided my hair- in a rough, crude manner, not perfectly neat like girls' hair- and left them in indefinitely then they eventually would essentially turn into dreadlocks because they would just continue to get more and more teased on their own by staying in braids. I've so far done this to a handful of locks of hair on my head and while I can possibly see these braided locks turning into dreads eventually, they're pretty thin, so I don't know if they'd get a little thicker as they teased up?

it depends.
it might help if you use dread wax.
its hard for me to explain considering that i dont have them, i just know people who do.
but yeah, one of them is starting his w/ braids, but you need wax then and twist.

good luck!
:]

That really isn't the way you do dread locks. If you want them to look right and nice ,there is a better way to start them. If you really want them there are web sites that tell you exactly how to do them,just type in dread locks and you will find the info you need. By the way,you do wash dread locks. It's recomended to wash them about two or three times a week. Don't even bother doing what all the other people on here told you to do because they have no idea what they are talking about. Don't start the dreads with braids either.

Of course whites can have dreads. Twisting the hair is a better way of making them. It takes a while because they become thicker by holding loose hair together. You lose an average of 60 hairs a day, by twisting the hair around each other they will remain attached to existing hair.

braid your hair in single braids. depending on how thin your hair is your braids may need to be a little bigger. at first, you may need a rubber band on the end if your hair comes out of braids easy. Dreads take years and years to grow but you have to be patient. also, if your hair is thin it may go straight when you wash it.
just braid it in single plat style braids and don't take them out.

hope this helps!

i think the best way to get good dreads is to go the sea/ocean for a week and wetting your hair and not rinsing it. then form your dreads by twisting and backcombing/teasing these locks. the most important thing is not to wash your hair! i know it sounds whacked but this is the best way!!

uhm, do you know how gross dread locks are? that isn't 'rough crude braids' that turn into dread locks over time, thats unwashed hair thats greasy & just nasty. i suggest going and getting a hair cut and then washing your hair. good luck! :o}
