Frankly, which of the two is better WITHOUT taking price into account?? I have heard that Open Office rivals MS Office in almost every aspect except that MS Office is more suitable and friendly for novices. Now, I am neither a novice nor an expert, so can I go with Open Office? Details and links will be appreciated. And does Open Office include a database like MS Access? Rate each one out of 10.(again without price factor)

I've tried OpenOffice this year for about 4 months and it's not bad. There are nifty extensions that MS Office does not have. It does have a thing called BASE that allows you to control / interact with databases, but it requires you to know a database product first so it's not as easy as Access or FoxPro.

MS Office is much better integrated and simpler to use and more powerful.

I'd give MS Office an 8 out of 10, and OpenOffice a 6.

Actually Rating Depends upon the User knowledeg lavel. and intrest and such thing.

USE Openoffice cause
It's Free
It's Opensource OPENSOURCE FOR OPENMIND GUYS
It's A best Efforts
Much Faster Bug Fixes and Dovelopment then Microsoft counter part

Bad Things about Opensource
Software for making Prasentation is not quite good compared with POWER POINT (POWER POINT IS STILL THE BEST WHILE COMPARING)
In Database Related things they had not done very good work

You may use openoffice if
you are some what geek and hate microsoft Whatever the cause.
you think plateform independence is critical for your work.
Don't use Openoffice if
you are sending your resume/portfolio to any indian companies.
Actually Microsoft Office had set up standards and generally everybody follows in offices for faster work.

I am running severals sites and found that almost 85 users came to my site uses Windows XP
12 % uses Mach
2 % uses BSD unix
1 % uses Linux

BUt Depends upon the case of your Odience. Use that Technology that suits your pocket/work/plateform...

The look and feel is slightly better in the Case of Openoffice. But, I do not think this is ideal for the beginners.
And even more, it takes slightly more resource than MS-office. OpenOffice is a bit slower in response time compared to MS-Office.

No application like MS-Access has been developed yet with openoffice.

I'll rate MS-Office higher than Openoffice as the product is still under development stage.

Open office is ok, but There are somethings it doesn't do that are a bit important.

First off, You can't change the transparency of background text color in the powerpoint clone. The special 3d text looks very terrible, like compressed jpeg in poor quality. In Writer, if you need to paste an image, you end up having to drag it around on every paste. Say you need to scan text and copy/paste it into your document, you more then likely have to copy line by line to make sure the quality is kept decent.

I haven't used it as I'm happy with MS Office but for a free alternative, it's meant to be excellent.

Both are equally friendly. It's a toss-up for me. I use OpenOffice almost exclusively.
